Are there any other addiction treatment for heroin other than methadone?

I know methadone is commonly used, but I've heard that it can be addictive as well. I suppose it could be true, as heroin was first believed to be a medication for morphine addiction. So, are there other treatments for heroin addiction?

  1. Methadone is an opioid drug and as such, can produce physical dependence in anyone taking it regularly. However, dependence and addiction are not the same thing. Methadone is not as addictive as heroin simply because it does not provide the rush that short acting opiates do. In patients who are stable on the drug there is no euphoria or high at all with methadone.

Methadone is far and away the most effective drug for opioid dependence available today. Most long term opiate addicts have sustained damage to their ability to produce natural endorphins and will need external opioid supplementation on a long term basis.
